by Amanda Connelly

The Order, which has been working in Mar del Plata for 20 years, said the nuns attacked and beaten while the tabernacle was desecrated in the nuns’ chapel and a small sum of money being stolen.

The Order in Mar del Plata, a prominent seaside and fishing resort, works to helps those living there who are terminally ill as a result of AIDS as well as carrying out other humanitarian work.

The Missionaries of Charity, founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa, (above) herself a nun in what is now Albania, works throughout the world to help ‘the poorest of the poor’, with sisters taking vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Originating in Calcutta, where there are 19 homes, the Order provides help to those with AIDS, support for refugees, alcoholics and the homeless, as well as homes for those suffering from leprosy.

Mother Teresa is set to be canonised by Pope Francis at the Vatican on September 4 this year, the final step in becoming a saint.
