Venezuelan bishops express sorrow after refinery disaster

The president of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference expressed his 'deep sorrow' after a refinery explosion and fire killed 41 people and injured more than 50 people in north-western Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Archbishop Diego Padrón Sánchez (above right with the Holy Father), the conference’s president, described the disaster as ‘events that shed in grief and mourn all Venezuelan people and, in particular the inhabitants of the state of Falcon.’

The explosion was caused by a gas leak in the refining system in Falcon and affected nearby residential areas that needed to be evacuated.

Most of the victims of the explosion worked for the National Guard and were responsible for the protection of the refinery, and their families.

“As pastors of the church, we want to convey our words of consolation and Christian solidarity to those affected by this unfortunate event,” the archbishop said. “May the faith in Jesus Christ, Lord of life, the doctor of souls and bodies, support them in their grief and grant peace that only He can offer.”

The archbishop called on all Catholics in Venezuela to offer prayers during this moment, and added that he hoped ‘the Lord allows painful moments like this to help grow in fellowship and in the spirit of collaboration.’
