Blantyre unites in march for murdered Catholic teenager
The South Lanarkshire community of Blantyre united this morning in a show of support for the family of Reamonn Gormley, 19, the victim of a fatal unprovoked knife attack on Tuesday night.
Well over a thousand people, including neighbours, friends and former John Ogilvie High School classmates, united in grief to walk to through the town in Mr Gormely’s honour, past the floral and football shirt tribute at the roadside where he was attacked. The march, that stretch for a mile and stopped traffic, left from the Parkville Bar on Glasgow Road where the teenager been watching Tuesday’s Celtic versus Aberdeen match shortly before the attack.
“Myself and a few others organised this peaceful memorial walk in memory of Reamonn to show our respect and support for his family and also to show that we are coming together as a community in this sad, sad time,” John Tierney, march organiser, said.
Mr Gormely’s parents and brother, who described him as ‘a wonderful son and a loving and caring boy,’ thanked Blantyre Walk and Rollers group for organising today commemorative event.
The civically minded murdered teenager had recently returned from a gap year working for a children’s charity in Thailand to begin a psychology course at Glasgow University.
Strathclyde Police said a 22-year-old was detained yesterday in connection with Mr Gormely’s death.
This murder of this teenager brings tears to our eyes, It’s nice to see he has friends to stand by him and highlight this hatred.
