4—BROTHER-AIDAN

Funeral plans for Nunraw brother

Br Aidan, Bernard Neil, OCSO, of at Nunraw Abbey has died.

Br Aidan was 77 and had been a monk for 48 years when he passed away on Wednesday March 30.

Br Aidan joined the Cistercian Abbey in 1960, attracted to the simpler style of the monastic life of manual labour, rather than the clerical, choir form.

He was the acting Sub-Prior, (3rd Superior), of the abbey for the past 15 years, as well as manager of the abbey’s farm.

After his Gateshead Schoo education, he enlisted at Aldershot in 1953, served time in Hong Kong, and the Army Emergency Reserves until 1958 before deciding his vocation lay in the monastic life.

He is survived by his sister, Enis, and brother, Lawrence and extended family.

His funeral will be on Thursday April 14 at 1pm at Sancta Maria Abbey, Nunraw, Haddington.
