Female footballer in anti-Catholic outburst

A female Rangers Football player has been forced into a apology after posting anti-Catholic abuse on the twitter website.

Lisa Swanson, 19, of Saltcoats sparked outrage after posting slurs before, during and after Sunday’s Old Firm cup clash.

Ms Swanson claimed she hated ‘tims’ who were ‘a disgrace to the world’ and made her ‘feel sick.’

Ms Swanson also slandered former Celtic manager Jock Stein.

She later apologised for her remarks saying;  “I realise it was wrong to say and didn’t mean anything bad by it.”

Her bigoted comments are the latest in a recent resurgence of sectarianism in Scotland.  Also this week justice minister Kenny MacAskill revealed that there were 235 criminal offenses with a sectarian element last year. There have been now more than 2000 such offenses since 2003.

The release of the figures has prompted further debate over the future of anti-sectarianism charity Nil by Mouth. The charity may have to close its doors next month unless it secures further funding from the Scottish Government.
