Pope urges prayers for pirates’ victims

Pope Benedict XVI prayed for those captured by pirates during the Church’s annual Sea Sunday celebrations.

Speaking to pilgrims after the midday Angelus at his Summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope called for the safety of those captured in areas such as the Somalian coast.

Piracy has emerged as a global problem, with 2010 seeing a record high of 445 attacks. Even though most of the well-reported attacks are along the Somalian coastline, the Apostleship of the Sea have warned that this is a global problem.

“I have a special thought today for the chaplains who work in the pastoral care of sailors, fishermen and their families,” the Pope said. “I assure my prayers for those sailors who unfortunately find themselves the captives of pirates.”

“It is my wish that they be treated with respect and humanity, and I pray for their families that they be strong in faith and do not lose hope of being reunited soon with their loved ones.”

Following this public address, the Pope met with a group representing the families of 800 seafarers recently kidnapped by pirates.

Sea Sunday was established to increase awareness about the work of seafarers among Christian communities, and to promote the maritime ministry and pastoral care carried out by the Apostleship of the Sea.
