Fair play to EK school for its FairTrade, Traidcraft support
An East Kilbride Catholic school has been celebrated as one of the best in the country at fighting poverty through trade.
St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School has been recognised for their outstanding contribution to Traidcraft. The charity is the UK’s leading fair trade organisation—set up in 1979 as a Christian response to poverty—and sells fare trade products and promotes international development.
Over the last year, St Andrew’s and St Bride’s has collected £4935 for the charity, putting it in Traidcraft’s top 200 sellers. The school was recently awarded the prestigious title of Top Fair Trader.
The school’s Fair Trade Group, organised by RE Teacher Mary Glen, sells a wide variety of fair trade goods throughout the year, supporting Traidcraft’s work helping small-scale farmers, workers and artisans to trade their way out of poverty.
“This is a fantastic achievement for the school and a real tribute to the pupils and staff involved in this very worthwhile cause,” Headteacher Fiona Mullen said. “Not only are the children learning about the need for sustainable Fairtrade they are actively supporting it, willingly giving up their time and helping to make a real difference. The products are so good that the weekly tuck shop is immensely popular!”
