7-ST-MAURICE'S-HS-FEAST-DAY

Archbishop Tartaglia joins staff and pupils at St Maurice’s High School for feast day celebration

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow joined the community of St Maurice’s High School in Cumbernauld last month as they celebrated the feast of the school’s patron saint.

The celebration was particularly unique as the Cumbernauld school is the only one in Scotland dedicated to St Maurice, whose feast day is marked on September 22.

Fr Gerald Sharkey, school chaplain, Fr Andrew Garden and Fr Michael Briody—three priests representing the three dioceses within St Maurice’s catchment area—joined Archbishop Tartaglia in celebrating the Mass, which was attended by a number of pupils, staff, parents and invited guests.

Following the Mass, Patricia Alexander, St Maurice’s headteacher said that the whole school community was ‘privileged that Archbishop Tartaglia was able to visit our school and celebrate Mass for us.’

“The archbishop’s presence added to the great sense of occasion which was enjoyed by pupils, staff, members of our parent council, our partner primary headteachers and a local authority representative,” she said. “It was a very fitting way to celebrate the feast of our patron.”

St Maurice’s Performing Arts department, including the girls’ choir, which was only founded at the beginning of the present school year, performed the music Liturgy for the Mass, while a number of pupils

contributed to the Mass as altar servers, offertory bearers and readers.

Following the Mass, staff and guests were invited to the school library for refreshments that had been prepared by St Maurice’s Teenage Cancer Trust group.
