A week of credit and debt
We owe a debt of gratitude this week to the Catholic midwives who, to their credit, in spite of blanket media bias against their cause and the lengthy legal process they face, are defending their freedom of conscience case at the Supreme Court as the SCO goes to press.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde medical professionals Mary Doogan and Connie Wood, who are conscientious objectors to abortion, were successful at the Court of Session in Edinburgh in April last year in their cases to be excused from delegating to or supervising staff involved in abortion.
As their employer appealed, five Supreme Court justices in London are now hearing the challenge.
The Church and the SCO actively support the pro-life cause. This case, however, goes beyond the issues of abortion and religious freedom. At its heart lies freedom of conscience. We keep the midwives in our thoughts and prayers.
On the subject of debt, Archbishop Leo Cushley offers sound advice. The Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh says the ethical saving and lending of credit unions helps all of society ‘so they are something to be promoted within the Catholic Church and across broader society.’
The archbishop’s sage words show his awareness of the financial problems constantly facing hard-working families, especially in what can all too often be the cost-prohibative run up to Christmas. And while the Church is primarily concerned with our spiritual preparations at this time of year and always, it is good to see the Archbishop is in touch with the reality of financial troubles for the poor and rich alike and is willing to try to help keep our bodies and souls together.
Remember, credit unions are regularly held up as an example of Catholic social teaching in action.
