Regarding Philadelphia,it may interest SCO readers to learn that at one time, within the recent past, Catholic schools in Philadelphia taught more students than did the non-denominational public schools.
Re Zavala. The timing could not have been worse. One bishop resigns because of sexual misbehavior, while a former Episcopal bishop, married with three children receives “quasu-episcopal” powers (and retians his mitre). Cynicism is emerging in the USA and elsewhere regarding clerical celibacy. (All indications are that Zavala was a highly regarded shepherd of his flock, who enjoyed the esteem of his fellow bishops.)
