Remembering ‘remarkable’ Archbishop Romero
As Archbishop of San Salvador's anniversary approaches, Edinburgh plays host to annual Romero lecture
The annual Oscar Romero lecture will visit the Lauriston Jesuit Centre on Wednesday, marking the 31st anniversary of the martyr’s death.
The lecture is being given by Fr Juan Hernández Pico SJ, a Central American Jesuit theologian based at the Romero Pastoral Centre and is entitled: Romero and the Social Gospel—the challenge for us today.
During his lecture, Fr Hernández Pico will draw on his personal memories of Archbishop Romero (above) and will share his reflections about the Bishop of San Salvador’s social gospel, and the challenges it poses for us in today’s world.
Archbishop Romero was shot dead on March 24 1980 as he celebrated Mass in a hospital chapel. He spoke out against repression by the US-backed regime during El Salvador’s 12-year civil war, in which at least 75,000 people died.
In addition to Edinburgh, the Romero lecture will take place this week in Salford, Newcastle and London and the Jesuit community in Edinburgh are looking forward to an evening ‘remembering the remarkable Archbishop Romero.’
“We are delighted that he [Fr Pico] has chosen to come to Edinburgh as part of his visit to the UK,” Fr Chris Boles SJ, of the Lauriston Jesuit Centre, said.
