Cardinal O’Brien to lead clergy protest against Trident
President of Bishops’ Conference of Scotland to address Scottish Clergy Against Nuclear Arms event at Faslane in April
Cardinal Keith O’Brien is to lead a demonstration against nuclear weapons at Faslane naval base in April.
The Prayer, Peace and Picnic Gathering is being organised by Scottish Clergy Against Nuclear Arms (SCANA) and will be held on Saturday, April 16, the week before Easter. The group says its aim is to keep up the pressure on the Westminster Government to scrap Trident and to maintain public interest and concern about the UK’s continued possession of nuclear weapons.
The event will take place at the north gate of the base between noon and 1pm, and the group that gathers will be addressed by Cardinal O’Brien (seen above at an earlier protest in Glasgow); the Very Reverend Alan Macdonald, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Bruce Kent, formerly chairman of CND.
John Harvey of SCANA urged interested groups to get involved.
“This will be a family friendly event,” he said. “We’re not seeing it as an opportunity for people to be arrested. There will be music and sharing of concerns, and of course worship, including Communion. We’re hoping that groups will come from across the country— from churches, youth groups, trade unions and others.”
