Catholic primary school rallies to help brave boy, 4, fight cancer
The father of a young boy who attends a Catholic nursery in the Archdiocese of St Andrew's & Edinburgh is appealing for donations to help his son fight leukaemia.
Oscar Szlachta, four, a pupil of the nursery attached to St Martin’s RC Primary School in Tranent, was diagnosed with the disease in Poland earlier this year.
He has gone through several months of chemotherapy in Poland, and is currently unable to travel back to Scotland as he is too weak. His dad, Slawomir Szlachta, 36, has launched a fundraiser to support his son.
Family struggle
Mr Szlachta was only able to stay with Oscar for a few weeks after his diagnosis before he had to return to Scotland to earn money to support the family, while Oscar’s mum, Anna Zajaczkowska, 35, had to quit her job as a cleaner in Tranent to remain with her son in Poland.
Mr Szlachta said: “Oscar is my beloved baby boy who, in March 2019, was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia type B. Currently, he is undergoing his treatment in the Oncology Clinic in Katowice, Poland. He’s being looked after by a team of oncologists, neurologists and a nephrologist.
“Oscar is only a child, but he loves being among other kids and have a playful time. He adores being outdoors, playgrounds and swimming pools are his natural habitat. He is very passionate about dinosaurs.
“Unfortunately, recent months have been extremely challenging and seemed nothing like a little boy’s normal life. My son has endured a lot of pain and discomfort and it breaks my heart every day to witness it.”
Chemotherapy
Oscar is currently receiving three doses of chemotherapy a day.
Mr Szlachta works as a chef full-time and has been working hard to provide support for his family, though he is struggling financially to keep up the support. He has lived in Scotland for five years.
He said: “I would like to highlight that Oscar’s treatment is covered by the national health system only while he stays in the hospital. On the discharge period, we are obligated to cover every single expense and this has become very difficult.
“I am Oscar’s father and I will work day and night in order to make sure he gets what [he needs], but your kind input will be extremely appreciated and will find a special place in our hearts.”
School community
On December 13, parents, staff and pupils at St Martin’s Primary School will come together for a fundraising event to help young Oscar. The event, titled ‘A Merry Little Christmas Party’ will include a disco, games and prizes.
Headteacher Lauren Davies said: “This is very much a family event with all funds raised going to support Oscar and his family with the costs of his treatment.
“The children in the nursery are keen to support Oscar and although not aware of the ins and outs of his illness know that he has been feeling poorly and are hoping for him to get better soon.”
