Ecumenism promotes Christian unity, Holy Father says
Pope Benedict XVI has described how ecumenism has promoted Christian unity, making it more attractive to those who do not believe.
During his weekly general audience in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Pope yesterday described the theme of ‘One in the Apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer.’
He described the early Christian community of Jerusalem as an example to modern Christians, calling it ‘a place of unity and love’ that remained faithful to the Gospel and Apostolic teachings, and cared and shared between each other.
“No one in the community should be hungry, should be poor. This is a basic obligation,” he added.
The Pope also expressed his regret that ‘divided Christians’ were unable to share in Communion, and called for Christians during the week of prayer to ‘recognise themselves as children of God and, therefore, brothers and sisters to one another.’
