Gail Sheridan accuses police of anti-Catholic treatment

Gail Sheridan has lodged a complaint about alleged anti-Catholic treatment during the police investigation of her husband, former Solidarity leader Tommy Sheridan, on perjury charges.

Mrs Sheridan (above) claimed that during the five-hour questioning in February 2008, Lothian and Borders Police detectives confiscated her rosary beads and asked questions directly related to her religion.

According to her lawyer, Aamer Anwar, detectives compared Mrs Sheridan’s silence throughout as ‘a recognised PIRA, IRA form of terrorism technique focus at a spot on the wall, focus at the table, focus at the roof, at the bin, say nothing.’

“She was left traumatised and is upset at the fact that the way she exercised her right to silence was portrayed as a terrorist technique,” he said.

Both Mr and Mrs Sheridan have also lodged a complaint about footage of their interviews being used in a BBC documentary following the trial verdict.

Holyrood hopeful Gail Sheridan was cleared of perjury at the High Court in Glasgow last month. She hopes to stand for a Glasgow list seat on May 5.

Tommy Sheridan was found guilty of lying to the courts during his successful defamation action against the News of the World in 2006, and will be sentenced later this month.
