Saints get support from bishop
St Mirren FC has won two sought after prizes this week—the Scottish Championship and the support of the local bishop.
Bishop John Keenan of Paisley praised St Mirren’s efforts last weekend after their goalless draw with Livingston FC saw them win the Scottish Championship and gain promotion.
“Congratulations to St Mirren and everyone in the town of Paisley and surrounds in winning the Scottish Championship and thereby promotion to the SPL 2018/19,” the bishop wrote on Facebook.
The bishop also noted the club’s ‘brilliant’ coach Jack Ross, their ‘inspirational CEO and legend’ Tony Fitzpatrick, and ‘amazing team and all at the club’ for what he described as ‘such a phenomenal achievement and turnaround in just one year.’
He also wished the best of luck to a fellow Paisley Diocese team that they would also move to the SPL in the near future.
“Crossing our fingers for the other team in our diocese, Greenock Morton, to follow them up to the SPL as soon as possible,” he added.
The team have worked their way back to the premiership under Jack Ross, who took over in 2016, after they were relegated three years ago.
