New beer created in honour of Pope Benedict XVI
An Ohio brewery has paid tribute to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in a rather unusual way, as they unveiled a specially commissioned beer in his honour.
‘Beer-nedict XVI: Pint-ifex Maximum,’ a Bavarian style hefeweizen, or wheat beer, was launched at the recent Society for Catholic Social Scientists in Steubenville, Ohio.
It was revealed at a fringe event run by the Benedict XVI Centre at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, with the first kegs having a priestly blessing bestowed upon them.
The beer is the creation of the Hightower Brewing Company, a local brewery in based in Ohio.
“What better way for the British and American allies to meet than over beer—certainly, a party over tea would have brought up old feelings between the nations,” writer Marc Barnes, a Franciscan University of Steubenville and PhD student at the Benedict XVI Centre, said. “My hope is that they joy of being Catholic will spill over from this particular feast and inspire new, creative work among all the academics and intellectuals milling about between the bar and bluegrass band.”
The Benedict XVI Centre was launched last year with Vatican approval, and is a place for research on religion and social sciences.
“The Pope Emeritus honoured St Mary’s with a visit in 2010 and—like him—we like good beer,” centre director Professor Stephen Bulivant said. “So this seemed like a fitting and fun way for the Centre both to toast Benedict’s 90th year, and to mark the 25th anniversary of the Society for Catholic Social Scientists.”
Pope Benedict was pictured earlier this year on his 90th birthday, enjoying celebrations with a pint of beer.
