Pro-lifers urged to sign new petition against decriminalisation of abortion
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) Scotland are encouraging pro-life supporters to commit to opposing the decriminalisation of abortion, as the British Medical Association (BMA) votes in favour of the controversial new bid.
The petition warns the decriminalisation of abortion could see the termination of pregnancies available for any reason up until birth.
SPUC Scotland is asking people to lend their signature to the petition, in order to oppose the campaign, which is being led and backed by a number of organisations and groups, including the BMA, who recently voted in favour of decriminalisation.
The pro-life petition argues that, contrary to the beliefs of many of the groups promoting the decriminalisation, ‘abortion is happening on a massive scale and prosecutions are extremely rare and have happened only twice in recent years for extreme cases. Women are not living in fear of prosecution over abortion.’
It also noted that polls indicate more women want greater, not fewer, restrictions on abortion, that decriminalisation may increase the number of women performing abortions on themselves and of unqualified individuals carrying out abortions, and that decriminalisation ‘removes the highly controversial issue of abortion from the accountability of the democratic process and prevents citizens from having an opportunity to lobby their representatives on the matter.’
