Conservatives suspend councillor after SCO report into bigoted comments
By Amanda Connelly
A Conservative Party councillor has been suspended following anti-Catholic social media posts uncovered by the SCO last week.
Alastair Majury, who was elected to Stirling Council last month, is now under party investigation. Fellow Stirling councillor Robert Davies has also been suspended from the party following the uncovering of racist posts online. Police Scotland have confirmed they are investigating the comments.
The SCO discovered a number of comments posted by Mr Marjury under the secret Twitter account @Mulder1981, in which he last year used the word ‘tarrier,’ a derogatory term for Catholics.
In 2012 he also tweeted: “Why is the Church against birth control? Because they’ll run out of children to molest.”
Complaints were made against Robert Davies for racist remarks. Posting from the Twitter account @resdavies, he posted a number of offensive tweets in 2013 captioning a photograph of black people waiting to board a cargo plane.
A Conservative Party spokesperson confirmed the two had been suspended following the shocking remarks: “Both councillors have been suspended from the party pending an investigation.”
A spokesman from Police Scotland said: “Police in Forth Valley can confirm that a report of offensive communications on social media was received on Wednesday May 10 and enquiries are ongoing.”
The local elections in May returned nine SNP and nine Conservative councillors to Stirling Council, as well as four Labour councillors and one Green.
