Relics of St Anthony of St Padua to come to Paisley
St Mirin’s Cathedral will host the relics of the 13th century saint, who called God the 'Father of Mercy,' in the Year of Mercy on June 19
The relics of St Anthony of St Padua are to come to Paisley in June as part of a tour of the UK.
The relics will be in St Mirin’s Cathedral in Paisley throughout Sunday June 19 for the only Scottish hosts, before heading to Middlesbrough on the following day on the first stop of a tour of England.
St Anthony was a 13th century Portuguese friar who was one of the earliest members of the Franciscan Order founded by St Francis in 1209. Two relics of the saint will be coming to Scotland, one of which Pope Francis venerated 16 years ago in Argentina as Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires (above).
The future Pope led a procession through the streets of the Argentinean capital in 2000, carrying in his hands a reliquary containing a piece of St Anthony’s floating rib.
Pope Francis’ devotion to St Anthony is due to the saint’s love, care and concern for the poor and marginalised. Known for helping people find lost items, St Anthony intercedes with those trying to find a job, a home, faith, love, hope and mercy.
The last time the relics of St Anthony visited Britain there were queues in cities and towns around the country as devotees flocked to honour the saint.
The relics will be accompanied by Fr Mario Conte, editor of the Messenger of St Anthony, the magazine published by the Conventual Franciscan Friars of St Anthony’s Basilica in Padua, Italy, where the Saint’s tomb is located.
The tour is seen as of particular relevance in this the Year of Mercy as St Anthony often speaks of mercy, describing God as the ‘Father of Mercy.’
The relics will remain exposed during the Eucharistic celebrations taking place. At the conclusion of each Mass, all those attending will be invited to approach the relics and to receive an extraordinary blessing.
