Head master named for Glasgow’s St Aloysius College
Matthew Bartlett to take over from John Browne at Jesuit-run school
The Jesuit-run St Aloysius College in Glasgow is to have a new headteacher from October.
The private school’s governors announced on Tuesday that Matthew Bartlett will be head master with effect from October 24, 2016, replacing John Browne, who will take over as head master at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, in the autumn.
Mr Bartlett (above) is currently headteacher at Dover Grammar School for Girls, which also hosts a co-educational sixth form.
The new St Aloysius headteacher said he was delighted to take up the role, describing the Glasgow school as having ‘a treasured place in Jesuit, Catholic and Glaswegian education.’
“It is a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to join the Aloysian community,” Mr Bartlett said. “I hope that my broad and deep experience of Catholic education and of previously leading an outstanding school will help to continue the development of the College as an inspirational and innovative school.
“The sense of community within the college and the city is already very apparent to me and I am excited about moving to a vibrant city such as Glasgow. I can’t wait to join the College; October almost seems too long away.”
Mr Bartlett spent eight years as deputy head of St Bede’s College, a Catholic independent school in Manchester. He spent his early teaching career at Manchester Grammar School before leading the history department at Nottingham High School.
“Mr Bartlett will bring to St Aloysius’ College a wealth of experience and an outstanding track record of success in Catholic teaching and senior management,” John Hylands, chairman of the St Aloysius’ governors, said. “We are delighted to welcome him to Glasgow.”
