Holy See prefers Britain remains in EU

A senior Vatican official has suggested the Holy See would prefer the UK to remain with the European Union.

Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States said in a TV interview that if the UK voted to leave the EU in a referendum that would weaken Europe.

“I think we would see it as being something that is not going to make a stronger Europe,” the archbishop (above), who is originally from Liverpool, said. “The Holy See respects the ultimate decision of the British people—that’s for the British electorate to decide.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether Britain should stay in the EU. Newspaper reports this year have suggested it come happen as soon as this Summer.
