Motherwell ecumenical service to be held for refugees and steel workers
Christians invited to pray on Sunday in Dalziel St Andrew's Church of Scotland for those fleeing war in Syria, and for those in Scotland affected by the closure of steel plants
Christians of all denominations will gather in Dalziel St Andrew’s Church of Scotland in Motherwell on Sunday November 29 to pray for refugees and for a positive outcome of the current talks on the steel industry in Scotland.
The one-hour service will offer up prayers for a compassionate response by the United Kingdom and other wealthy countries to the plight of the huge numbers of Syrian people forced to flee their homeland as a result of persecution and violence.
100 Syrian refugees arrived in Scotland on November 17, the first of 1000 the UK government promises to host before Christmas. Yesterday, a second group of refugees from Beirut in Lebanon, neighbouring Syria, arrived to be housed by Edinburgh, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire local authorities.
The ecumenical service will also focus on the recent decision by Tata Steel to close steel plants in Scotland, including Dalzell (above) in Motherwell. Prayers will be offered for the workers threatened with redundancy and for the working group set up by the Scottish Government to seek ways to save the steel industry in Scotland and preserve jobs in the area.
—The service on Sunday will take place in Dalziel St Andrew’s Church of Scotland, 47 Merry Street, Motherwell ML1 1JJ at 3pm. All are welcome.
