Short notice asylum evictions begin in Glasgow
The UK Borders Agency (UKBA) has begun issuing 24-hour eviction notices to asylum seekers in Glasgow despite reassurances that no one would be moved out of their homes in less than 14 days
A breakdown in a deal between Glasgow City Council and the UKBA to house asylum seekers in the city led to plans to remove hundreds of families from their homes in Glasgow and resettle them elsewhere.
Following an emergency meeting last week with Damian Green, Immigration Minister, MPs Ann McKechin, Gemma Doyle, John Robertson, Margaret Curran, Anas Sarwar, Willie Bain and Ian Davidson were assured that around 1300 families and single people faced with eviction at short notice would be allowed to stay in their homes after all.
More than 120 asylum seekers staged a demonstration (above) against the moves in Glasgow while Archbishop Mario Conti denounced plans to remove asylum seekers from their Glasgow homes.
Short notice evictions have, however, begun to take place in Glasgow and, in a case taken up by the Positive Action in Housing charity, a single father has been told to move out of Glasgow City Council accommodation within 24 hours to an Angel Group accommodation. The charity questioned the ‘contemptuous’ behaviour of the UKBA and said they have ‘grave concerns about the health and safety of vulnerable families and individuals being moved out at short notice and the use of private accommodation providers.’
