Date set for ordination of two new priest for St Andrews and Edinburgh

Deacons Tony Lappin and former SCO employee Jamie McMorrin will be ordained St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral next summer

A date has been set for Archbishop Leo Cushley to ordain two new priests to the archdiocese.

Deacon Tony Lappin (above left) and Deacon Jamie McMorrin (above right)—a former SCO employee—will be ordained to St Andrews and Edinburgh Archdiocese on June 24 2016, in St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Deacon Jamie McMorrin is from Kinghorn in Fife and studies in Rome at the Pontifical Scots College.

“I suppose with all the doom and gloom you hear from some people about priestly vocations this double ordination will be a sign of real hope for the archdiocese that there are men coming forward for the priesthood,” Deacon McMorrin said.

Deacon Tony Lappin, from Loanhead in Midlothian, is currently a student at the Pontifical Beda College in Rome.

“I think we both felt that to have a diocesan celebration be momentous for the Archdiocese and so the cathedral gives that focus,” he said following a meeting with the archbishop at which a date for his ordination was agreed.

Both men will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving in their respective parishes in the days following their ordination.

“I’m delighted that Jamie and Tony have decided that they would like to be ordained together and in the cathedral, the mother church of the Archdiocese,” Archbishop Cushley said. “I think it will be a wonderful occasion, a moving occasion and I’m already really looking forward to it.”
