English, Welsh bishops urge Catholics to think carefully before May general election
Letter from Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales calls for Catholic voters to scrutinise candidate’s positions on pro-life issues and poverty
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales have released a letter offering guidance ahead of the May general election.
“At this general election we are asked to think about the kind of society we want here at home and abroad,” the bishops write. “Whom you vote for is a matter for you alone. Our aim is to suggest how you might approach this important question in May 2015 and to suggest some key issues for your reflection as you make your own decision.”
The letter suggests Catholic should consider where candidates in their constituency stand on life issues such as abortion and assisted suicide, highlighting the likelihood that the next parliament will deal with some attempt to legalise euthanasia.
It asks Catholics to think about the debate on Europe saying ‘the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity assist us in how to think about the future of Europe.’
The letter also covers topics raging from a duty to help poorer nations and to show concern for the environment, to the need to protect Catholic schools.
Speaking at the launch of the letter at a press conference in London, Archbishop Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster said: “It is shocking that in a society which is so rich as ours that there are people, even people in employment, who are dependent on food banks and handouts.”
