20-GLASGOW-CRASH

Prayers urged after George Square tragedy

Concerns grow for those affected by a serious traffic accident that took place in George Square this afternoon.

A number of people are believed to have been killed and injured after a bin lorry crashed into a group of pedestrians in George Square in Glasgow city centre.

Archbishop Tartaglia described the incident as heart breaking ‘tragedy’ and urged all to please pray for all involved.

“My heart breaks for all those involved in this tragedy as they go about their business just a few days before Christmas,” he said. “I ask any person of faith to pray now for those who have died and their relatives and those who have been injured.”

Police described the crash, outside Queen Street station and the Millennium Hotel, at about 14:30, as very serious.

Gerry Gough, SCO reporter, said he was ‘walking out of Royal exchange Square when I heard a large vehicle skidding and loads of screaming, and you could see it had mounted the pavement so it had could have hit pedestrians.’

A large number of emergency vehicles are in attendance and roads surrounding George Square have been closed.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “There is an ongoing incident involving a bin lorry on George Square.”
