CARDINAL SARAH GIVES HOMILY DURING 2010 MASS IN HAITI

Guinean cardinal named as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments

Cardinal Robert Sarah takes over from Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera who was made Archbishop of Valencia in August

Cardinal Robert Sarah has been appointed as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

The cardinal (above) was formerly the head of the Holy See’s Pontifical Council Cor Unum, which oversees Catholic charitable organisations and humanitarian relief agencies.

Cardinal Sarah’s new role has been vacant since August, when Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, who held the post since 2008, was named Archbishop of Valencia by Pope Francis. Cardinal Cañizares Llovera was seen as more in-line with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s views than those of Pope Francis.

Cardinal Sarah will now oversee matters related to the liturgical practices of the Church.

The new appointee was born in Guinea in 1945 and was ordained in 1969. He was appointed Archbishop of Conakry in 1979 by St John Paul II. He was made a cardinal in 2010.
