Derby parish hall scoops new architecture award
Parish priest at St Joseph’s, Derby, says hall has brought new hope to congregation
A Catholic church hall in Derby has won the prestigious presidents’ award for new church architecture.
The hall of St Joseph’s Church in Derby was described today an ‘eye-catching new building in the centre of Derby consists of a multi-purpose hall with kitchen, storage and toilet facilities.’
Fr John Trenchard, parish priest at St Joseph’s, said the hall, designed by Evans Vettori Architects, had helped bring hope back to his parish.
“When I came to St Joseph’s parish four years ago, a great sense of pessimism became apparent to me, with cynical concerns amongst the parish congregation as to whether the new building would be large enough or adequate for purpose,” he said. “Since completion of the Hall, I have not heard a single word of criticism. This is quite remarkable.”
The president’s award is presented annually on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association President and the National Churches Trust’s Joint Presidents, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
Claire Walker, CEO of the National Churches Trust, a sponsor of the award, said it was were intended to ‘recognise the expertise and talent of church architects.’
