Catholic private school to stay open after parents raise six-figure sum
Fernhill, Rutherglen, had contacted administrators but has been saved from closure after a ‘swift response’ from parents.
A leading Catholic private school has been saved from administration after parents raised hundreds of thousands of pounds in just two days.
At a meeting on Tuesday evening, board members from Fernhill school in Rutherglen, revealed to parents that financial difficulties had resulted in administrators being contacted. It was feared the school could close as early as the end of the month.
Following the meeting, parents began raising money and have secured a six-figure sum that they hope will allow Fernhill to continue for the foreseeable future.
A statement from the school board said they were delighted to have secured the school’s future.
“A plan has been put in place which will not only save the school from administration, but will also provide a platform for investment in the school’s future,” the statement said. “This has been possible by the swift response of parents who have secured pledges for a six figure sum. The reaction of the parents, teachers and pupils, when the school’s future was threatened, was overwhelming and is testament to the strength of our community and the quality of education we offer.
“We look forward to continuing to offer a fantastic education to our pupils in a close and friendly environment and to welcoming new pupils next year.”
The statement also said that further financial support had been provided by board members Tony and Kathleen Boswell, who parents have praised for their efforts to keep the school open. The board members, who have security over the Fernhill buildings after investing significant funds, have pledged to allow the school to operate rent-free for the next five years. Teachers at the school have also agreed to a pay freeze.
One of Scotland’s leading private Catholic schools, Fernhill has 230 pupils and delivers both secondary and primary education, as well as nursery learning. School fees are £9,300 a year for a senior secondary pupil.
