Blessed Pope John Paul II to be Patron Saint of World Youth Day

POPE Francis will announce Blessed Pope John Paul II as the patron saint of World Youth Day on Divine Mercy Sunday as he Canonises the late Holy Father.

The plans were noted in L’Osservatore Romano as Pope Francis delivered his message for the 29th World Youth Day, which will be held on Palm Sunday in the Vatican City.

The proclamation of Blessed John Paul II as patron saint of World Youth Day recognises his fundamental role in the youth gathering, having announced the first celebration of World Youth Day during his Papacy, and supporting the event since its inception in 1985.

“The Canonisation of John Paul II, to be celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter, will be an event marked by immense joy,” Pope Francis said. “He will be the great patron of the World Youth Days which he inaugurated and always supported. In the communion of saints he will continue to be a father and friend to all of you.”

Pope Francis made his first appearance at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro last year, and will be present again in Krakow in 2016 when the next edition of the international gatherings, which are interspersed with the Palm Sunday gatherings at the Vatican, takes place.
