Archbishop Nichols is named as a cardinal
Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster (above) has been named a cardinal by Pope Francis.
It has just been announced the Holy Father is to appoint 19 new cardinals next month, including churchmen from Haiti and Burkina Faso, reflecting his commitment to the poor.
The new cardinals will be formally instated at a ceremony, known as a consistory, on February 22 . Sixteen of the new appointees are under 80, including Archbishop Nichols, 68,making them eligible to enter a conclave to elect the Pope’s successor.
Archbishop Nichols is president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, He previously served as Archbishop of Birmingham from 2000 to 2009.
The Pope named his new cardinals during his angelus at St Peter’s Square.
The new cardinals are:
Pietro Parolin, Titular Archbishop of Acquapendente, Secretary of State
Lorenzo Baldisseri, Titular Archbishop of Diocleziana, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops.
Gerhard Ludwig Műller, Archbishop-Bishop emeritus of Regensburg, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Beniamino Stella, Titular Archbishop of Midila, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.
Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster (Great Britain).
Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano, Archbishop of Managua (Nicaragua).
Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of Québec (Canada).
Jean-Pierre Kutwa, Archbishop of Abidjan (Ivory Coast).
Orani João Tempesta, O.Cist., Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
Gualtiero Bassetti, Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve (Italy).
Mario Aurelio Poli, Archbishop of Buenos Aires (Argentina).
Andrew Yeom Soo jung, Archbishop of Seoul (Korea).
