Holy Father prays for South Sudan, Syria, Philippines in first Christmas address

Pope Francis has called for humanitarian aid access in Syria and ‘social harmony’ in South Sudan in his first Christmas Urbi et Orbi (To the City and to the World) address.

The Holy Father also pleaded for divine aid to rescue child soldiers ‘robbed of their childhood’ and for peace in the conflict-torn Central African Republic which he said was ‘often forgotten and overlooked.’ He prayed for those recovering from the typhoon in the Philippines.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims were present in St Peter’s Square for his speech and blessing delivered from the central balcony of the basilica this morning.
