Two popes Fran Benedict

Pope Francis urges Catholics to emulate the Pope Emeritus

Pope Francis has praised his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, for the courage he showed in choosing to retire.

During the Angelus yesterday, Pope Francis called on Catholics to follow their former leader’s example in listening to their conscience when making decisions.
“This doesn’t mean following one’s ego, doing whatever interests us, whatever suits us, whatever pleases us,” the Pope said. “Conscience is an interior space for listening to the truth, to good.”
The Pope’s remarks are seen as supporting the right of himself and his successors to retire instead of holding onto the office before death.
Pope Benedict, then 85, resigned citing that he did not have the mental and physical strength to continue in his role, and has since retired to a Vatican monastery.
Before becoming Pope in 2005, Benedict worked closely with his predecessor Pope John Paul II, who became afflicted by Parkinson’s Disease during the last years of his Papacy.
