Benedict XVI’s final public words as Pope, perhaps ever
Pope Benedict XVI has just made his last address and public appearance as Pontiff, and possibly ever, at the window overlooking the main square at his summer retreat of Castel Gandolfo.
The retiring Holy Father flew from the Vatican City to Castel Gandolfo this evening, by helicopter (above), in sunshine as the bells of St Peter’s rang out. His Holiness, accompanied by Archbishop Georg Ganswein, was greeted upon his arrival by the local bishop and town dignitaries.
He addressed the crowds gathered with unscripted and heartfelt remarks.
Dear friends
I am happy to be with you here surrounded by the the beauty of nature and your affection. Thank you very much for your friendship. You know today is a different day for me, I am no longer Pope… I will no longer be Pope after 8pm (7pm GMT). I am going to become a pilgrim about to start the last stage of this journey on earth.
I would also like with all my heart, mind, … inner strength to [continue] to work for the common good and Church.
Supported by your affection, let us go forward for the good of the world and the Church.
May God Bless you, thank you, good evening.
