Marian icon will be the focal point of pro-life pilgrimage
The pilgrims are transporting a copy of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa, a revered icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to show support of life and the traditional family. ***UPDATE NOV 10: Icon Scottish itinerary: Monday Edinburgh, Tuesday Carfin and Wed - Fri Glasgow. Organised by
pro-life activists around the world, the pilgrimage left the Eastern Russia city of Vladivostok, on June 15.
***It will arrive at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh on Monday November 12, travel to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at Carfin for Wednesday November 14 and then visit St Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow on Thursday November 15 before leaving for the North of Ireland.
Charlie McCluskey, a Knights of St Columba director, said his order would help the pilgrimage ‘however they can’ when it is in Scotland by serving as ‘stewards and guards’ and providing transport.
On the pilgrimage, the icon will be transported by car through 23 countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.
“All this distance will be travelled in specially designed cars with pro-life logos and slogans,” Igor Beloborodov, Russian coordinator for the pilgrimage, said. “Despite bad weather, sometimes with no sleep and rest, we went to our goal. During this time, our car broke down three times, but with God’s help, we went further… In each city we were joined by more and more people.”
In the cities the icon has visited so far, the members of the pilgrimage team prayed for the family and the unborn, participated in TV and radio broadcasts, and conducted master classes for pro-life activists.
The icon will finish its journey at Fátima, Portugal, near the Atlantic Coast, before the end of the year.
