8-POPE-ANGELUS-DISASTERS

Holy Father prays for victims of natural disasters

Pope Benedict XVI has called on Christians to pray for people in China, the Phillippines and Iran affected by recent natural disasters.

In his midday Angelus yesterday, the Pope reflected on the torrential rain that killed 85 people in the Phillippines’ capital of Manila and a typhoon that killed dozens of people and forced two million more people to be evacuated in China.

The Pope also prayed for people in the North of Iran who experienced two earthquakes on Saturday which killed 250 and injured over 2000, with the death toll likely to increase.

“These events have caused numerous deaths and injuries, thousands of displaced people and extensive damage,” the Pope said.

“I invite you to join me in prayer for those who have lost their lives and for all the people tried by such devastating calamities. May our solidarity and our support not be lacking to these our brothers and sisters.”
