Plans for new Catholic university in Belarus gather momentum
Plans are going ahead to establish a Catholic university in the Belarussian capital, Minsk.
Metropolitan Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz has been given the necessary permission by President Lukashenko and has the land on which to build the university.
President Lukashenko during a visit to the Vatican, also gave his permission for the university to Pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Kondrusiewicz recently appointed the executive director of The Brian Faul Foundation, Mr O’Donnell as consultant advisor to the archdiocese for education (above) and part of the remit will be to oversee and coordinate the planning and establishing of the university.
“A working party is in the process of being set up which will include people with the relevant skills and experience in order to assist the Archbishop with this project” said Mr O’Donnell. “Belarus is going through a very difficult time, and no matter what one thinks about the rule of law there, it is important that we have hope and stand alongside the Church and others, who are striving to create a just society. The permission of the president has been given, we must take the opportunity and provide educational opportunities for the people of Belarus”.
