Largs parish prepares for Golden Jubilee

The parish of St Mary, Star of the Sea, Largs is finalising preparations for its Golden Jubilee next month.

Bishop John Cunningham of Galloway will join Fr Eamonn Flynn, parish priest of St Mary’s, to celebrate Mass on Sunday June 24 at 11am.

The Mass will be followed by a celebratory two-course lunch at the Brisbane Hotel in Largs. A few tickets for the lunch, priced £11 for adults and £5 per child, are still available and can be purchased by contacting Gordon McMillan on: 01475 672234.

A commemorative booklet marking the jubilee, including a history of the parish and many photographs and significant events, will also be on sale during the weekend of the Mass.

Evening of Gaelic song at Edinburgh University chaplaincy

A special concert of Gaelic spiritual songs from the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides will be held at St Albert’s Chapel, Edinburgh University, this Saturday.

The concert will feature singers Alasdair Codona and Gillebride MacMillan, with Deirdre Morrison on fiddle.

Admission to the concert—which begins at 7pm—is by donation to the new chapel fund to St Albert’s.

St Albert the Great is home to the Dominicans who provide a chaplaincy service to Edinburgh University. The community is in the process of building a new purpose- built chapel.

Aberdeen Diocesan golf outing

The Bishop’s Golden Jubilee Trophy, Aberdeen Diocese’s annual golf outing will take place on Friday June 29 at Elgin Golf Club.

The cost of the trip is £43 (deposit of £10 per head/£30 per team is due before June 11) and includes one round of golf and high tea. The competition will consist of teams of three players and Aberdeen Diocese, led by Bishop Hugh Gilbert (above), is encouraging parishes to enter more than one team if they wish.

As well as a trophy for the winner, various other prizes will be played for on the day. Parishes are being contacted as sponsors for the prizes or for donations towards prizes. String quartet set for Edinburgh’s Lauriston Jesuit Centre

Edinburgh’s Lauriston Jesuit Centre is welcoming one of the capital city’s most up and coming string quartets to perform on Saturday evening.

The Roxburgh Quartet was formed in 2005 and the group’s repertoire ranges from the baroque to contemporary music.

Tomorrow’s concert begins at 7.30pm with tickets priced £8 for adults, £7 for concessions and £4 for students and children. The admission price includes a glass of wine or soft drink.
