Vandals target Carfin Grotto’s Glass Chapel
The Glass Chapel at Carfin Grotto in Motherwell Diocese was the subject of a shocking act of vandalism last week.
Police are currently investigating the incident that took place last Thursday, during which the chapel was broken into and damaged.
The Glass Chapel (below) and St Francis Xavier’s Church, are located at Carfin Grotto, Scotland’s national shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes.
Sources from within the St Francis Xavier’s parish community said that, during the break-in, the Sacred host had been scattered across the floor of the Glass Chapel.
A spokesman for Motherwell Diocese said: “The diocese is working closely with the police who are investigating the incident. We would appeal to anyone with any information to contact the police and assist them in their inquiries.”
Peter Kearney, spokesman for the Catholic Church, said that the attack highlighted a ‘most persistent’ prejudice of ‘anti-Catholic hate crime.’
“The Scottish Catholic Media Office is continually recording and responding to anti-Catholic comments or acts. We would urge anyone to contact us to report any such incidents or examples,” he said.
The Scottish Catholic Media Office can be reached at 5 St Vincent Place, Glasgow, G1 2DH, by email: [email protected] or by calling: 0141 221 1168.
Those with information can also contact Motherwell Police Office on 01698 48300.
Only in Scotland would this be aloud to happen
I’m sure there is vandalism in every country.
Anti catholic hate crime? What makes Mr Kearney so sure it is that, instead of just vandalism?
Yes there is vandalism all over the world, but why are the Catholics in Scotland a target? This a hate crime. Has anyone been arrested???
This is not only vandalism which is bad enough, but a serious sinful abuse of the Blessed Sacrament. In other countries people of other faiths tend to leave places of worship alone, considering them as places where God is, hence not to be touched. The strewing of the hosts indicates it is an extreme form of sectarian anti Catholic crime.
