New chancellor for Glasgow Archdiocese
Archbishop Mario Conti has appointed Fr Tom White (above) as the new chancellor of Glasgow Archdiocese.
Fr White, who was recently formally installed as parish priest of St Mary’s, Calton, will also take over the role as Archdiocesan master of ceremonies.
“I am delighted to appoint Fr Tom to this important position in the Archdiocese,” Archbishop Conti said. “He has many fine qualities which he will bring to the post, and his academic and priestly formation will serve him well in the role. I am also delighted to appoint him as parish priest at St Mary’s, Calton—a parish he has served as assistant priest for almost nine years and in which he is widely respected and appreciated.”
Fr White, 37, takes over as chancellor and master of ceremonies from Mgr Peter Smith (below), former parish prietst at St Mary’s, who was appointed to the Vatican’s United Nations Embassy in January. Mgr Smith becomes an attaché at the New York office this month, where the Holy See has UN Permanent Observer Status.
Fr White was born in Glasgow and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, from which he graduated with degrees in philosophy, theology and Canon Law. He was ordained in 1999 by the late Cardinal Thomas Winning, and is also executive chairman of St Margaret’s Children and Family Care Society. Fr White has served at St Maria Goretti’s in Cranhill initially as assistant priest and latterly administrator.
