Ruth Davidson takes over as Scottish Conservative leader
Glasgow list MSP supports Catholic schools but, as part of a same-sex couple, takes over new role during controversial period as Scottish Government contemplates legalising same-sex ‘marriage’
Ruth Davidson is the new leader of the Scottish Conservative party.
Ms Davidson, who was elected as a list MSP for Glasgow in May’s Scottish Parliament election, defeated the more experienced politicians Murdo Fraser, Jackson Carlaw and Margaret Mitchell to take over as party leader.
It was announced this afternoon that she had narrowly defeated Murdo Fraser to succeed Annabel Goldie as Scottish Conservative leader.
Ms Davidson (above) is a member of the Church of Scotland and has volunteered as a Sunday school teacher.
During the campaign she praised Catholic schools saying she welcomed ‘the Roman Catholic denominational schools in my area, and I see a large number of people who maybe aren’t from the Roman Catholic community who see something of value and go to them as well.’
Ms Davidson lives with her partner Saskia Halcrow in Partick. Ms Davidson takes over the leadership of the Scottish Conservative as the Scottish Government is consulting on plans to legalise same-sex ‘marriage’ and could bring the issue before MSPs in this parliamentary term.
