Catholics in Thurso mourn teacher’s death
St Anne’s Catholic Church in Thurso was packed for the funeral on Tuesday of a popular teacher who killed in a road accident last week.
Dr Kevin Costello was mourned by family, friends and colleagues and senior pupils of Wick High School—where he was principal science teacher,
Dr Costello, 47, was a passenger in a car being driven by fellow teacher Liz Wheeler. The Peugeot they were in was involved in a crash on the A9, a mile south of Thurso, with an oncoming campervan driven by a French visitor.
Glowing tributes to Dr Costello’s professionalism and dedication were paid at the funeral service, lead by parish priest Fr John Allen.
His widow, Michelle, and his twin sister delivered eulogies while retired Wick High rector Alister Traill also addressed the mourners. Mr Traill said Dr Costello was a born teacher who had been devoted to his job and one of the best teachers he had encountered in 40 years of education
Dr Costello and Michelle, a biology teacher at Thurso High, lived with their young family at their home in Scrabster. Following the service his coffin was driven to Strathy where it was interred in the village cemetery. Since the tragedy, over 1200 messages from colleagues and pupils have been posted on a Facebook tribute site.
