New Missal for the blind
Catholics with visual impairments will be able to follow the new translation of the Roman Missal thanks to special formats created by the Catholic Blind Society.
In preparation for the changes to the Mass, which will start in parishes next month, the society are producing large-print and audio guides and also working with RNIB to produce guides in braille from the completed text released late June.
“Work is now underway to produce the various alternative formats,” Sean O’Donnell, CBS director, said.
The society’s version of the Missal would be light and compact enough for personal use, and be produced alongside the liturgical calendar. In addition to the new Missals, the society is also producing response cards for use in schools, children’s liturgy groups and at home.
The task and the timeframe have been challenging for the society.
“We are under a great deal of pressure to get everything ready for September,” Mr O’Donnell said. “There are no paid staff, so everything is done voluntarily and without any funding.
The Vatican’s Vox Clara committee is at work on additional texts to the new translation of the Roman Missal. A committee statement released on July 27 said members spent most of their time at their recent meeting in Rome on a new translation of the prayers bishops use for the chrism Mass.
