Unlikely superheroes are marvellous fun

FILM REVIEW

Guardians of the Galaxy

Director: James Gunn

Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper

Running time: 122min

Certificate: 12A

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn, has a very sad opening but is not representative of the whole film.

The impressive ensemble cast (above) of the film are Chris Pratt who plays Peter ‘Star-Lord’ Quill, Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (who plays the voice of Groot), Bradley Cooper (the voice of Rocket Raccoon) and Lee Pace who plays the baddie Ronan the Accuser. None of the main characters stood out as they were all equally good. British viewers, especially Doctor Who fans, will enjoy seeing Karen Gillan aka Amy Pond as the blue-’bot’ Nebula.

The film throws a miss-matched band of unlikely superheroes together on a quest to save the galaxy from an evil threat. On their journey they learn the value of friendship and discover they are stronger together.

The characters of Groot and Rocket Raccoon are brought to life not only but the actors’ voices and humorous dialogue, but also by the impressive computer generate graphics in this film. Watching the film in 3D takes the experience to a different level.

While the film’s score gives a vintage feel to the gritty science fiction by showcasing 1970s hits by legends such as David Bowie, the Runaways and the Jackson 5, it was the lesser known tracks including Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling that stole the show.

Great film but not recommended for children under the age of 10 as it also contains strong language, and a lot of violence, in addition to the light-hearted comedic touches.
